‘Some have greatness thrust upon them’
It is the last night of Saul’s life. He is mentally confused and disorientated, repeatedly asking ‘how did I get here’
I never wanted to be king.
Saul has been driven to madness and has tried to kill his son Jonathan. He failed.
Where is that bastard prophet?
Saul has been rejected by the prophet Samuel and rejected by God.
Music! I must hear my music!
Saul is paranoid and psychotic about the talented young David, a musician with extraordinary military skills who is on target to become the next King of Israel...
Saul is a profound theatrical study on the psychology of power and its ability to drive people insane. The play is reminiscent of The Madness of King George and Amadeus, with a dose of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. Performed with a brilliant flair for physical theatre, Saul is totally gripping.
Saul was premiered at the East Midlands Centre, Nottingham, on 24th December 2001.
